Every community has a story worth preserving. From the rich Indigenous heritage of San Xavier and the Pascua Yaqui people to the historic missions, ranches, and rural villages that define Southern Arizona, the Canoa Heritage Area connects people to the places and stories that shaped our region.

Your support helps us preserve, protect, restore, interpret, and share this extraordinary heritage while transforming 36 historic and cultural sites into outdoor classrooms that inspire learning, leadership, and stewardship. Working alongside local leaders in 14 rural communities—from Three Points to Nogales—we bring educational opportunities and resources to areas that often have limited access to them.

Our Mission

Our mission is to preserve, protect, restore, interpret, and share the land, cultural influence, and history of the Canoa Heritage Area.

About our Program

Utilizing the thirty-six attractions within the Canoa Heritage Area as outdoor classrooms, we provide leadership training and support historic preservation in the fourteen rural communities we serve. We're Still Making History!

Who Do we Serve?

We serve the communities of San Xavier-Wa:k, Pascua Yaqui-Yoeme, Sahuarita, Green Valley, Amado, Arivaca, Tubac, Tumacácori, Rio Rico, Nogales, Sasabe, Three Points, Sells, and Topawa by partnering with local leaders to bring new perspectives, educational opportunities, and valuable resources to rural communities that often have limited access to the services and programs available in larger population centers.

Our Impact

Our volunteers can readily measure the impact of our outreach and media efforts through increased visitation and tourism revenue in the rural communities we serve. Because many of these programs and resources were not previously available, local businesses, nonprofit organizations, and community partners now have a reliable baseline for measuring the economic and social impact of our initiatives. Our "O'odham Youth Engagement & Mobile Video Project" was a particularly successful program, raising awareness of the importance of preserving the O'odham language and culture while empowering youth to share their stories.
